Heath Quartet return to the Lake District

July 19, 2024

Take the opportunity to welcome back the Heath String Quartet during their long overdue and welcome return to Cumbria.

The multi-award winning quartet, who will perform at Ambleside Parish Church on August 2, became Lake District Music’s first Musicians Benevolent Fund Ensemble Associate in 2006 which gave them invaluable support and opportunities at a crucial stage in their career.

“We have many wonderful memories of our time in Ambleside,” said cellist, Chris Murray.

“The chance to rub shoulders with world-class musicians – whether studying with them, collaborating with them on stage, or just eating in the canteen or drinking in the pub – gave us a true insight into the realities of life in the music profession.

The combination of these inspiring characters and the beautiful natural surroundings created something exceptional that we have not experienced elsewhere.

Many of our most formative musical experiences happened at LDM, and it feels very special to be returning again after nearly 20 years!”

The Heath String Quartet have won international plaudits for their gripping performances so expect an evening to remember on August 2.

Their festival appearance will see them perform Haydn’s String Quartet in B flat Op.50, No.1;
Tippett’s String Quartet No.2 in F sharp minor; Sarabande and Fugue by Lyadov and
Ravel’s String Quartet in F.

The Heath String Quartet return to Cumbria during a season when they have performed across the USA and played a trio of recitals at the Wigmore Hall in London.

Other appearances include Brighton, Latimer and Three Choirs Festivals and Oxford Coffee Concerts.

The Quartet have also completed a two-season residency at Berlin’s Pierre Boulez Saal, a Beethoven series at Bath Festival  and made their debut at Palau de la Musica Catalana in Barcelona, Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, Saffron Hall and Cheltenham Festival, as well as appearing at concerts in Handelsbeurs Ghent, Aldeburgh and at Norfolk and Norwich festivals.

Formed in 2002 at the Royal Northern College of Music, they are past winners of the TROMP competition, the Ensemble Prize at the Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the GRAMOPHONE Chamber Award for their recording of the Tippett quartets, and in 2013, they became the first ensemble in 15 years to win the prestigious RPS Young Artists Award.

Their Tippett album was followed by two discs recorded for Harmonia Mundi/PIAS and part-funded by a BBT Special Ensemble Scholarship featuring Tchaikovsky’s first and third quartets (BBC Radio 3 Disc of the Week) and the complete Bartók quartets (2017 Limelight Chamber Music Award). Their most recent release on Signum Records with Carolyn Sampson features works by Berg, Webern and Schoenberg.
