Welcome to our 40th Anniversary Festival!
This year’s programme is a celebration of 40 exciting years, with 10 days full of wonderful music, inspiring artists, and opportunities to experience creativity up close— all set within the exceptional beauty of the Lakeland landscape.
From the first to the final concert, we have programmed a trail of musical ‘40s’ with an array of companion events in a variety of engaging venues. Look out for our ‘Fanfare 4-40’ along the way!
The celebrations begin in style with the thrilling Jess Gillam Ensemble and will also see the launch of an exciting new initiative — the Lake District Music Academy Ensemble. This group will feature our three resident student quartets, including the Aestus Quartet, our first Lake District Music Ambassador Ensemble. The fabulous Apollo Saxophone Quartet returns, marking their own 40th birthday.
Don’t miss the exclusive opportunity to experience the complete cycle of Beethoven’s Piano Concertos, performed by the world-renowned Paul Lewis. We celebrate our founder, Renna Kellaway MBE in three concerts with the piano at their heart, featuring President Steven Osborne OBE alongside a host of renowned and longstanding festival artists.
With performances across many musical genres, our popular family & outdoor events will lead us to Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony — which must surely be the ideal way to complete our musical celebrations! The Northern Chamber Orchestra, four outstanding soloists, and our largest festival Chorus will bring their combined energies to this masterpiece, which was first performed in the UK 200 years ago.
As Schiller wrote in his Ode to Joy, we hope you will “Join our chorus of celebration!”
On behalf of Lake District Music, may I thank all our generous supporters, and we look forward to welcoming you on our ‘Festival 40’ journey.
