Pianist Steven Osborne OBE becomes President

October 23, 2024

‘In a class of his own’ described a performance of the then 17-year-old pianist Steven Osborne at one of Lake District Music’s first annual summer festivals. It has been so ever since with awards and accolades the world over, inspiring audiences through his mesmerising performances and over 40 recordings.

Protégé of Lake District Music’s late founder Renna Kellaway MBE, Steven was not only her student (at the Royal Northern College of Music) but took part in countless summer festivals, transitioning from student to fully-fledged international artist in front of an adoring Cumbrian audience.

The Lake District Music family are immensely proud of Steven’s achievements (including an OBE in the Queen’s New Year Honours list in 2022). As we look forward to our 40th anniversary, it is with the deepest sense of pride that we welcome him ‘home’ to honour the memory of his late mentor by becoming our inaugural President.

Steven Osborne OBE will appear at Lake District Music’s 40th anniversary summer festival in 2025 (1-10 August) along with a host of guest artists in concerts celebrating the life of Renna Kellaway MBE.

‘My career would not have been possible without that vital support during my formative years. Renna Kellaway left an incredible legacy through LDM, giving so many young musicians a chance to succeed, many of whom are now performing on the world stage. I can’t wait to give something back to an organisation that has meant so much to me, and naturally I jumped at the chance to become Lake District Music’s President and pick up the baton left by Renna.’ – Steven Osborne OBE

‘We are absolutely delighted that Steven has agreed to take on this new role, joining us at an important landmark in our history and helping to continue the legacy of our founder. He is a shining example of that same legacy, and in this exciting period of growth for the organisation we welcome Steven’s considerable advocacy and enthusiasm for our crusade to support the next generation of emerging musicians.’ – Stephen Threlfall, Artistic Director
